What to engrave and where it works
Personalised Jewellery Engraving
Engraving allows a piece of jewellery to carry meaning beyond its appearance. In many cases, the decision to engrave is straightforward. In others, the jewellery feels right but the wording takes longer to settle.
Engraving is permanent and deliberate. For that reason, most customers spend more time deciding what to engrave than choosing the jewellery itself.
All engraving is carried out in our own workshop using a high-powered laser engraving system.
Choosing what to engrave
Most engraving falls into familiar patterns. Names and initials remain the most common choice, particularly where discretion matters or space is limited. Dates are also widely used, often marking a wedding, engagement, or the day two people met. Some choose to engrave dates in Roman numerals, where the meaning matters more than immediate readability.
Short phrases are another common option. These are usually personal rather than decorative and often only make sense to the wearer. In practice, shorter wording tends to work best, especially on narrower rings where clarity matters more than length.
Quotations, song lyrics, and lines from literature are sometimes chosen, particularly where they relate to a shared experience. In these cases, a brief extract is usually more effective than a full sentence. Longer text often needs to be reduced to fit, which can affect legibility.
Religious or spiritual wording is sometimes engraved as a private reminder rather than something intended to be seen. These engravings are typically placed inside the jewellery.
Not all engraving is serious. Some customers choose humorous or light-hearted wording, usually hidden inside the ring. These messages are personal by nature and are engraved as entered.
Handwriting and fingerprint engraving
Text is not the only option. Handwriting engraving allows a signature or handwritten wording to be engraved from supplied artwork. This is commonly chosen for memorial pieces or messages that feel more personal when left in their original form.
Fingerprint engraving uses a real fingerprint image that is processed and engraved into the metal. The level of visible detail varies depending on the material, finish, and available space. Some metals show strong contrast, while others produce a more subtle result.
Where engraving can be applied
Most engraving is applied to the inside of rings. This suits names, dates, and short messages and keeps the engraving protected during everyday wear.
Some ring designs allow engraving on the outer surface. Suitability depends on width, profile, finish, and material. Not all designs are appropriate for outside engraving.
Our titanium dog tags can be engraved on one or both sides. These allow for longer text and are sometimes used for identification or medical information, depending on layout.
Font choice and readability
We offer a selection of around fifteen fonts on the website, covering a range of clean and traditional styles. In most cases, one of these will be suitable for the space available.
Other fonts can also be engraved by request, provided they are technically suitable at jewellery scale.
Readability is more important than decoration. Highly flowing or ornate fonts often lose clarity when reduced to the small sizes required for jewellery engraving. Fine lines, tight spacing, and detailed flourishes can become difficult to read once engraved into metal.
Plainer fonts with clear letter shapes tend to give the most consistent results, particularly on narrow rings or where longer text is involved.
What affects how engraving looks
There is no fixed character limit for engraving. The final result depends on several factors working together, including ring width, depth, metal type, surface finish, font choice, and layout. Some letters take up more space than others, and small changes in wording can make a noticeable difference.
Because of this, engraving suitability is assessed as a whole rather than by character count alone. In many cases, a shorter message engraved at a comfortable size will read more clearly than a longer message reduced to fit.
Permanence and responsibility
Engraving is permanent. The laser removes material from the surface of the jewellery to form the inscription.
Engraving does not fade or wear off. It cannot be removed or reversed without visibly damaging the item.
Engraving is applied exactly as entered. Spelling, punctuation, spacing, and capitalisation are not corrected. It is important to check all details carefully before completing your order.
If you are unsure
Where there is uncertainty around size, fit, or design, some customers choose to order without engraving first. Once they are satisfied, the item can be returned for engraving. This avoids situations where a permanently engraved item cannot be returned or exchanged.
