Tantalum Rings

Tantalum rings have a weight that surprises many people the first time they pick one up. It is the heaviest alternative metal we sell and almost four times heavier than our lightest titanium rings. On the finger it feels solid and reassuring, closer to the weight people expect from a traditional gold band than the light feel of titanium.

The natural colour is a deep grey with a subtle blue undertone, darker than titanium but lighter than black zirconium. Polished finishes reflect light with a bright graphite tone, while brushed surfaces soften the reflection and give a quieter, satin appearance.

The core of this range is the 5mm and 7mm court profiles in brushed and polished finishes. Hammered designs, chamfered edges and several Muonionalusta meteorite combinations are also available for those looking for something more distinctive.

Choosing a tantalum wedding ring

Weight and feel

Tantalum has a density of about 16.6 g/cm³, which our Tantalum Technical Guide explores in more detail. In practical terms the metal sits much closer to platinum than titanium in both weight and density, which is why the ring feels substantial in the hand rather than light.

Because tantalum is a pure metal rather than an alloy, the colour runs consistently through the entire band. Over time the surface develops the same kind of soft patina many people notice on platinum rings, where shallow marks blend gradually into the finish rather than standing out sharply. Our Tantalum Buyer’s Guide and Tantalum FAQ have more information about the metal itself.

Engraving

Tantalum is one of the best alternative metals for engraving. When laser engraved it produces a dark, high-contrast mark that remains clearly legible. Wedding rings are often engraved with dates, initials or short messages that carry meaning for the couple.

Because the metal conducts heat differently from other metals, engraving requires slower speeds and multiple passes. The process typically takes about four times longer than engraving an equivalent titanium ring, but it produces a deeper and clearer result. Font options can be seen in our Engraving Fonts, with further information in Engraving Information and Best Rings for Engraving.

Diamond setting

Diamonds can be set in tantalum by request in our workshop. Each stone is fitted by a Hatton Garden trained diamond setter. Because tantalum is more difficult to work than traditional precious metals, calibrated diamonds are used that match the exact size of the setting burr. This allows the metal to be worked tightly around the stone for the most secure fit.

Brilliant white diamonds are G colour, VS clarity, and coloured diamonds such as blue, green, yellow or black are also available.

Sizing and fit

Tantalum rings cannot be resized, so getting the correct finger size when purchasing is important. Our tantalum rings are available in UK finger sizes P through to Z+3.

Many of the rings in this range use a traditional court profile, which has a rounded interior edge that sits comfortably in everyday wear. Our Ring Profiles guide has more information on the profiles available. Wider rings can feel tighter on the finger than narrower ones in the same size, so our Ring Width Guide is worth reading before choosing.

The hammered and meteorite designs are often chosen by customers looking for something less traditional. For a broader range of similar designs, see our Unusual Wedding Rings for Men.
