How to Take a Fingerprint
Fingerprint Tool and Guide - Take a Clear Fingerprint for Engraving
Before starting, wash and dry your hands well. This helps get a clean print with better detail.
You do not need special tools - just follow one of the simple methods below.
Method 1: Take a Fingerprint Using an Ink Pad (Best Option)
- Press your finger into the ink pad.
- Roll it slightly from side to side to coat the high points.
- Press lightly onto plain white paper. It does not matter how hard you press - focus on transferring only the raised ridges.
- Try different fingers to find the clearest pattern.
- Let the print dry fully.
- Take a clear fingerprint photo of the best one.
- Upload it into our tool to preview, adjust spacing, download the design, and email it to us.
This method gives the best way to capture fingerprint detail, ideal for detailed pieces like fingerprint jewellery or a high-contrast fingerprint on dogtag.
Method 2: DIY Fingerprint with Pencil and Tape
- Draw a shaded box with a pencil, slightly bigger than your fingerprint.
- Rub your finger in the graphite to coat the high points.
- Place clear tape on your fingertip and lift the print. Do not press too hard - you are aiming to capture only the raised detail.
- Stick the tape onto plain white paper.
- Take a clear fingerprint photo, avoiding glare or flash.
- Upload the image to our tool, edit spacing, download the final result, and email it to us.
This is a useful option if you do not have ink. Having someone help can make it easier.
Method 3: Use a Phone App to Capture a Fingerprint (Not Ideal)
Some apps let you scan your fingerprint with your phone, but results are often poor:
- They miss detail
- They scan surface curves, not the actual fingerprint ridges
- Images are often low-resolution
If you do try this, aim to capture only the raised ridges. Then use our tool to adjust the image and send it to us.
Scars and Fingerprint Detail
Scars or scratches can add uniqueness. Our test image shows both vertical and horizontal scars - you can see these clearly in our fingerprint on ring example.

- Email it to us for engraving
This process works for all designs, from a fingerprint ring to a custom fingerprint keepsake.
FAQs
- Can I take a fingerprint from a child or baby?
- Yes, but it can be a bit tricky. Use the ink method and try gently rolling the finger. You might need a second person to help hold their hand steady.
- What kind of paper should I use for fingerprinting?
- Use plain white paper - uncoated printer paper is ideal. Avoid glossy or textured paper, as it can blur the print.
- How do I know if my fingerprint is clear enough?
- You should be able to see distinct lines and ridges. If the print looks smudged or too dark, try again using less pressure or a lighter ink load.
- Can I retake the fingerprint if I make a mistake?
- Absolutely. Try as many times as you need. Most people take a few prints before they are happy with the result. Pick the best one to upload.
