Damascus Steel Information
Our range of Damascus steel rings are all hand forged using 304L and 316L stainless steel and fabricated using up to 72 layers of alternating steel depending on design, width and depth of the ring.
The 304L and 316L stainless steel are forged in layers on top of each other to make a forged billet of alternating metals. The billet is then twisted, rolled, folded back on its self many times so that each layer can be viewed, as it twists and weaves through the design. It is this pattern that you see of the contrasting layers of 304L and 316L stainless steel. Depending on how the billet is twisted results in a different pattern. For this reason all of our rings although similar, will be unique in their design. Once we have a finished Damascus Steel rod we can then machine the ring out using a lathe. All of our Damascus Rings are lathed from a solid rod of Damascus Steel.
Damascus Steel Rings take a lot of skill and labour to manufacture, and are generally made individually, generally at a cost of a few hundred pounds per ring. To make our rings more affordable our Damascus steel rings are made in larger batches and held in stock, this allows us to bring manufacturing costs down to about 50% to 60% of the individual price of making a one off ring.

Many of the Damascus steel rings you will see available for sale from companies overseas are made from 1095HC and 15N20 nickel carbon steel. These are then soaked in acid which etches away the pattern and turns the high carbon content black giving a fantastic contrasting look. Unfortunately these rings are not compliant with the EU & UK metal allergy laws and are not considered safe due to the high nickel content.
Our rings are made from safe 316L and 304L stainless steel. The L in these metals stands for low carbon making them safe to wear and comply with EU & UK Nickel release legislation. We have one plain Damascus steel ring where you can see the layers shown as different textures in its natural steel colouring.
We also have a range of Damascus Steel Rings with black highlights to achieve the same effect of the Black Damascus steel finish. The black effect is a vacuum coating process called Physical Vapour Deposition, known as PVD. PVD is a very durable finish used to highlight the high spots of the ring for that contrasting look. PVD will however eventually wear off over years of wear where the ring will then look like its natural Damascus Steel Colour. We can also remove this PVD finish in our workshop prior to dispatch upon request. We do also hope to sell these same rings in the future without the PVD finish as another option.
Damascus Steel is a technique of twisting metal that is not just seen in steel. In each metal it has its own unique name. in precious metals it is known as Mokume-gane, in Titanium it is known as Timascus where different grades of titanium are used, and due to the effects you achieve with titanium, they are generally colourful designs.
With precious metal there is a lot of choice of colours that can all be twisted to great effect. The name given to precious metal is Mokume-gane. We would advise however of not purchasing Mokume-gane with silver and copper in the same mix as it creates a reaction where the copper erodes destroying the ring.
All of our Damascus steel rings will carry our own unique Damascus Steel logo discreetly laser engraved inside the ring.
